The approach: Castle Valley and Castle Pass to the northwest turret
Summit finish: The northwest hiking summit. Climbing the other turrets is optional.
Castle Peak’s volcanic towers make this a distinctive Donner Summit outing. Follow the Castle Pass approach to the northwest turret, the hiking finish described by the local route guide. Expect a steep, loose-rock climb. The other turrets require separate climbing decisions; Castle Pass alone is a turnaround, not the summit.
Keep the group together on loose terrain and leave time for a controlled descent.

The extremely small monarchy
A marmot crowned itself ruler of a castle with no doors. Its first decree required all clouds to look vaguely like cheese. Enforcement has been inconsistent.
