Meet the mountain

The approach: Lassen Peak Trail from Lassen Peak parking

Summit finish: The established hiking summit at the maintained trail’s end; the higher summit extension is optional.

An iconic NorCal volcano with open ridgelines and views across Lassen country. NPS describes a strenuous five-mile return hike with about 1,957 feet of gain. Its maintained trail ends at a recognized first summit; a steeper extension reaches the highest point. The hiking summit counts here. Snow can linger into summer, and much of the climb is exposed to sun and weather.

Pace the sustained climb at altitude and check snow and weather before choosing a day.

The kettle complaint
