Meet the mountain
The approach: Mitchell Canyon summit approach
Summit finish: Mount Diablo’s summit visitor-center area.
A defining Bay Area landmark and a substantial local summit day. State Parks describes the Mitchell Canyon climb as more than seven miles each way with roughly 3,000 feet of climbing. That is the effort behind this rating; higher trailheads offer shorter approaches to the same summit. Choose a mapped itinerary and account for heat, water, and park hours.
Build a full-day plan that leaves time and energy for the descent.

The horizon collector
This mountain began collecting horizons and ran out of shelf space. It stacked them in every direction. Visiting clouds are asked to admire the collection without touching.
