Meet the mountain

The approach: Robert Louis Stevenson Memorial Trail and summit fire road from Highway 29

Summit finish: Mount Saint Helena’s summit at the end of the summit-road approach.

A Wine Country landmark with an expansive Coast Range panorama. From the Highway 29 park access, use the memorial trail and summit fire road. State Parks summarizes the summit hike as about five miles each way; check the park map for your exact approach. The exposed upper road can be hot, and the park has no potable water.

Carry water for the whole outing and plan around the day’s heat and park hours.

The cloud tasting

A cloud critic declared the afternoon sky had notes of oak, sunshine, and slightly damp socks. The other clouds nodded thoughtfully. None of them had any idea what oak was.
