Meet the mountain

The approach: Avalanche Gulch from Bunny Flat via Helen Lake

Summit finish: Mount Shasta’s summit.

The NorCal skyline giant is the kind of mountain that keeps finding its way into your daydreams. Avalanche Gulch from Bunny Flat is the reference snow-climbing route. It changes markedly as snow melts, so a season label alone is not enough to choose it. Other approaches, including Clear Creek, need their own planning. Use ranger and avalanche-center information for route conditions and requirements.

Choose the route for current conditions and your snow-climbing preparation.

A SUMMIT QUEST TALL TALE · FICTION

The enormous hat

Shasta asked a cloud tailor for a modest hat. The tailor measured once, panicked, and used the whole bolt of sky. Shasta wears it like nothing unusual has happened.
