Meet the mountain

The approach: Mount Tallac summer trail past Floating Island and Cathedral lakes

Summit finish: Mount Tallac’s summit.

A Tahoe classic that earns its place through both the lake-filled approach and the panorama from the top. The summer trail climbs past Floating Island and Cathedral lakes before reaching the summit. Plan the full return day, check snow, and obtain the appropriate Desolation Wilderness permit. The hiking rating assumes summer trail conditions.

Keep enough energy for the long descent, with steady food and water breaks.

The lake mirror inspector

A cloud checks its reflection here before every important weather event. It always asks whether it looks too puffy. The lake has learned that this is a rhetorical question.
