Mt. Whitney
The endurance boss: highest point in the contiguous U.S.
Quest challenge 7/10 · Grand Expedition
Quest estimate for the described approach: endurance, altitude, and technical terrain combined. Conditions can change the difficulty. This is not an AllTrails or climbing grade.
Meet the mountain
The approach: Mount Whitney Trail from Whitney Portal via Trail Crest
Summit finish: Mount Whitney’s summit plateau.
The highest summit in the contiguous United States is a big chapter for any trail journal. This rating refers to the Mount Whitney Trail from Whitney Portal, not the Mountaineer’s Route or east-face climbs. The long ascent at altitude requires deliberate permit, weather, and turnaround planning. Snow and ice can change the summer hiking route substantially.
Plan the entire return itinerary and check permit and trail conditions for your date.
