White Mountain Peak
A long ramble into a stark, high-altitude world above 14,000 feet; relatively nontechnical, but demanding.

Meet the mountain
The approach: White Mountain Road from the Barcroft gate, past Barcroft Station
Summit finish: White Mountain Peak’s summit hut area.
A stark White Mountains landscape makes this long ramble above 14,000 feet feel like another world. The usual hiking start is the gate below Barcroft Station. The station is an intermediate destination, and special open-gate events use a different start. Confirm rough-road access and treat the high altitude and weather seriously despite the road-like route.
Plan acclimatization and check the research station’s access information.

The ancient appointment
A mountain scheduled a five-minute chat with an old tree. The tree said it would be ready in a moment. The mountain brought a book. It has since finished the library.
